  2. Review Dallas Meeting Minutes
    • reviewed meeting minutes … no amendments required
  3. Mission Statement Review
    • Ron presented the revised mission statement. There was general agreement that the statement accurately reflected the purpose or the group:
Provide programming to enhance the professional development of AIChE members and industry colleagues who affect manufacturing process improvements. Expand in scope to include other aspects of manufacturing technology and secure active participation from a greater breadth of the ChE population.
    • Ron will provide a proposed Vision Statement for the 12D area with the purpose of including/targeting the interests and activities of engineering professionals in the manufacturing sector.
  4. Proposed Name Change
    • A number of proposed name changes were reviewed. It was the general consensus of the group that while the term Manufacturing appeared too broad a suitable 'modifier' was yet to be identified which would capture the intent and essence of the area. This proposal will be reviewed again at a future meeting. Other names to consider:
      • Manufacturing Technology
      • Process Improvement & Development in Manufacturing
      • Improvements in manufacturing
      • Manufacturing Process Improvements
      • Improvement & development in manufacturing
      • Manufacturing Excellence
  5. Los Angeles 2000 Session Review
    • There are no 12d sessions scheduled
  6. Houston Spring 2001 Session Review - 2 sessions
    • PTP's are due Oct 16th 2000
      Toll Manufacturing
Greg Goodnight (Solutia) and Ramesh Rameswaran (Lyondell) will be the chair and co-chair respectively. This could be a joint session between 12b (Pilot Plants) and 12d (manufacturing). It could also be co-sponsored by another Group.
      Process Innovations for Existing Processes
Ron Mack and Andreas Matzakos will be the chair and co-chair respectively. A Call for Papers has been drafted and will be sent shortly to the extended membership.
  7. Reno Fall 2001 12d Session Review
The proposed sessions to be presented in Reno in Fall 2001 (Nov 5-9) were discussed. Clarification of the titles and responsible persons are to be defined by the Fall 2000 meeting

    #8 Batch Plants Overview
Chair - Dave Rosenthal/co-Chair John Battler - not cosponsored

#9 Pharma & Bio Batch Plants Overview
    Chair - TBD/co-Chair TBD - cosponsored with 15

#10 Poster Session - all Group 12 areas

Action Item: Members to approach manufacturing personnel in respective companies to recruit chair and co-chair for #9.
  8. New Orleans Spring 2002 Topical Proposal
It was proposed that 12D organize a Topical Conference for the Spring 2002 meeting in New Orleans --- would require members to generate 8-12 session topics. Decisions about this Topical must be completed by 12/00.
  9. Other Business
A short discussion regarding issues of recruiting resulted in the suggestion that all current members solicit colleagues at their respective companies to double our current membership. This would be to both achieve higher level of representation and contribution from the profession and contribute to the success of the proposed certification of Group 12 as a division of the AIChE.

It was also suggested that manufacturing personnel be solicited for input regarding what factors represent either obstacles to their attendance at AIChE meetings or those which would attract them to future meetings.

Perceived concerns from manufacturing personnel: time constraints, cost/benefit ratio, under the umbrella of process development. Additional ideas to stimulate more participation: ensure topic relevance (Email, short surveys); start at top; start with Mfg technologists
