AIChE Process Development Division Technology Transfer (Area 12C) Mtg
2002 Indianapolis Annual Meeting
The agenda items for the Technical Transfer area (12c) meeting were division/area information, the technology transfer area charter, technology transfer sessions in Indianapolis, future scheduled sessions, ideas for future sessions, and an open discussion (including possible programming topics for the 2004 Spring national and Fall annual meetings). Key highlights and minutes from this meeting follow:
Division/Area Information
The Process Development Division (#12) was granted full divisional status at the Indianapolis annual meeting. Our new division is compromised of 4 different areas. For the tech transfer area, John Peragine (from BMS) is the chair, Annette Johnston (from Abbott) is the chair-elect, and Osman Aboul-Nasr (from Fluor) is the activities chair.
Technology Transfer Area Charter
The area vision, mission, and goals were presented and discussed.
Technology Transfer Session in Indianapolis
There were two sessions at the annual meeting. "Commercialization of Separation Unit Operations" was chaired by Anita Katti (from UCB Bioproducts) and had 8 papers scheduled. "Pharmaceuticals: Rapid Process Development and Manufacture" was chaired by Annette Johnston (from Abbott) and had 5 papers scheduled.
Future Sessions
There is one session scheduled for the 2003 Spring National meeting in New Orleans. "Analytical Technology Transfer: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" will be chaired by Katie Hunt (from Rohm and Haas). For the 2003 Annual meeting in San Francisco, the Process Development Division is co-sponsoring several sessions with Division 15 in a topical conference entitled, "Discovery, Development, and Delivery of Medicines". The tech transfer area will co-sponsor "Challenges in the Pharmaceutical Industry in View of FDA Regulatory Issues" with an invited speaker from the FDA. John Peragine (from BMS) and Stelios Tsinontides (from Merck) will co-chair this session. Another session in this topical will be "Biopharmaceutical Separations" chaired by Annette Johnston (from Abbott).
New Ideas
A list of possible programming topics for future meetings was discussed. Some of the newer ideas included "Chemists are Mars/Engineers from Venus", benchmarking technology transfer, and Process Analytical Technologies (PAT).
Open Discussion (including the 2001-2003 12c area officer elections)
The group brainstormed potential programming topics within the division and for the 2004 Spring meeting in New Orleans and Fall meeting in Austin. Topics included:
- 6 sigma
- Process development tools ("Tool Time" topical)- this was discussed as a possible division wide initiative for 2004, involving areas 12a,b,c,d
- Emergence of Process Analytical Technologies (PAT)- John Peragine (from BMS) agreed to consider chairing a session at the 2004 Fall mtg
- Technology transfer benchmarking survey (like the Pilot Plant area survey currently under development)- A suggestion was made to put together survey in late 2003/early 2004 and present results at the 2004 Fall division mtg. The approach and relative timeline currently being used by the Pilot Plant area- 12b- would provide general guidelines to the tech transfer benchmarking study
- Barriers to effective tech transfer (worldwide and within a company)- For the 2004 Spring mtg, Osman Aboul-Nasr (from Flour) and Ramesh Rameswaran (from Lyondell) agreed to considering chairing and co-chairing a session respectively
- Contractor or TPM tech transfer
- External links
- Future prospects for tech transfer
- Due diligence (licensing & acquisitions), including benchmarking- possibly for 2004
- Chemists vs. engineers (contrasting perspectives)- similar to the session done at the 2000 LA annual mtg
The key suggested topics for 12c programming for the 2004 mtgs will be provided to Ray Rooks by mid 1/03, prior to the NPC mtg.
