AIChE Process Development Division Technology Transfer (Area 12C) Mtg
11/7/01
Reno Annual Meeting
The Technology Transfer area (12c) of the Process Development Division met
in Reno on 11/7/01. John Peragine (area co vice-chair) facilitated the
mtg. The slides presented at the mtg are in a separate Power Point file.
Agenda items and key minutes from discussions generated by the mtg slides
follow:
Division/Area Information
John Peragine welcomed the group. The area chair, Cawas Cooper,
unfortunately could not attend the mtg. The Technology Transfer area (12c)
is one of the four areas in the AICHE Process Development Division (12).
Cawas Cooper is the area chair. John Peragine and Anita Katti are the co
vice-chairs.
Technology Transfer Area Charter
The vision and mission statements of the Technology Transfer area,
developed over the past year or so, were presented and discussed. The
short and long term goals of the area were broadly listed as learnings from
technology transfer functions throughout industry and academia.
Technology Transfer Session in Reno
The 12c session in Reno on 11/9/01 was entitled, "Batch Process
Development in Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms". This was chaired by Michael
Choi from Merck and co chaired by John Peragine from Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Seven papers (from industry and academia) were planned with a keynote
speaker from the FDA (Dr. Ajaz Hussain).
Post mtg note: Dr. Hussain could not attend last minute due to FDA
priorities. He provided hard copies of his presentation prior to the
session which were discussed among the attendees. Overall, the seven
papers of the session were well attended (15-25 people). Due to the
success of this session, it is planned to repeat this topic with new papers
at a session at the 2003 Annual mtg in San Francisco.
Future Sessions
The Technology Transfer area will be co-sponsoring two sessions with area 12d in the Manufacturing topical at the 2002 Spring National mtg in New Orleans. For the 2002 Fall Annual mtg in Indianapolis, a session will be co-sponsored with the Crystallization Division (area 2g). Anita Katti will be co-chairing this session. The first Process Development Symposium is tentatively scheduled for June 2003. This is being organized by Cawas Cooper. Since the next NAMF session is set for June 2003, it was suggested that some coordination between the symposium and NAMF be considered. As discussed above, another batch process development in Pharma session is being considered for the 2003 Fall Annual mtg in San Francisco. This session would focus more on newer pharmaceutical dosage forms.
New Ideas
A laundry list of new ideas, compiled over the past year, was presented for
discussion. It was felt that two of the ideas, "donation of intellectual
property" and "from ideas through development to patents", were more
appropriate for area 12a (Process Research and Innovation). Two new ideas
were suggested:
- Process and Equipment Standardization- case studies including learnings and success/horror stories.
- The new ISPE/FDA Technology Transfer Guide (planned for issue during 2002)- John Peragine is on the committee and will provide more details in future mtgs.
The original laundry list:
- TT to/from Toll Manufacturing
- Corporate Partnerships (Univ. to Industry)
- Intra-company TT (Chemists to Engineers)
- Internal and External (or Outsourced) Process Development
- Govt. to Industry TT
- Safety Aspects of TT (Lab to Pilot to Plant; Licensing)
- Donation of Intellectual Property
- Work with external TT Organizations
- Information Technology Tools
- From Ideas through Development to Patents
- History of a Birth of a New Process
- Evaluation of Technology
- TT of Analytical Methods (focussing on work processes and not methods)
- Licensing and Acquisitions Topical Conference (with area 12a)
- TT Benchmarking / Survey
- New Process Patents
Open Discussion (including the 2001-2003 12c area officer elections)
John Peragine was elected the 12c area chair for the 2001-2003 term.
Annette Johnston from Abbott was elected the 1st vice chair (chair elect).
(Congratulations, Annette, and welcome to the group)! The position of 2nd
vice chair (or activities chair) was not filled at the mtg. Jay Rappaport
from Dupont was suggested as a possible candidate for 2nd vice chair.
Post mtg note: Jay appreciates the nomination but cannot accept it.
We're still in need of a 2nd vice chair. Suggestions/nominations are
gladly welcome).
Next Meeting
The next area 12c mtg will occur during the next Spring National mtg in New Orleans during the week of March 10-14, 2002.
