There was no scheduled activity for Area 12b at the (current) Reno conference, where there is a Process Development Division Topical Conference on Batch Processing. Elections were held for the three Area 12b leadership positions. With much appreciation for his efforts, Bill Dale (Xerox) stepped down as the Chair of the Area, and Bob Duggal (Ethyl) assumed this position (in absentia). David Edwards (Zeton) become First Vice Chair. Joe Powell (Shell) was nominated for ,and became, the Second Vice Chair (in absentia).

  1. The Role of Pilot Plants in Process Development
  2. Pilot Plants : The Uniqueness of Small Scale
  3. Traditional and Novel Pilot Plant Reactors
  4. Key Factors in Successful Pilot Plant Design and Operation
  5. Pharmaceutical Pilot Plants

Co-sponsoring Session 3 with the Reaction Engineering Division, and Session 5 with the Pharmaceutical Division will now be pursued. Chair and co-chair assignments are due by December 15, 2001. There may also be an Area 12a topical conference at the same meeting.

PTP Open 3/2003
PTP Closed 5/2003
Proceedings Due 8/2003

Action Items

  1. Plans for benchmarking of pilot plants are being developed (Shiah Cherney and Bob Duggal).
  2. A co-chair needs to be found for New Orleans 2003 (Joe Powell).
  3. Consider co-sponsoring an event with the Mixing Group (All).
  4. Consider the benefit of round table panel discussions at the end of a technical session (All).
  5. Chair and co-chair assignments are needed for San Francisco by December 16, 2001 (David Edwards).

Brainstorming Future Session Topics

Future topics were brainstormed at the meeting. Bill Dale encouraged each member to come up with a suggestion, and the discussion went around the table. The following topics were suggested:

A suggestion was made to co-sponsor a session with the mixing group. Another suggestion was made that the session chair and co-chair could run an ad-hoc panel discussion to stimulate participation and debate as the final "paper" of a session. These ideas will be considered for the New Orleans meeting and for all future meetings.
