Focus of the Meeting
This group meeting was held as part of the Division meeting. The main tasks were as follows:
- Reviewed the progress of group 12a and proposed new topical conferences and sessions for the coming conferences
- Elected new Group Chair (Cheryl Teich, Rohm & Hass), Co-Chair and Chair-Elect (Yinlun Huang, Wayne State University) and Co-Chair (O'Young of Mitsubishi)
Welcome, Introductions and Mission Statement
Area 12a Chair, Dr. Kamlesh Bhatia welcomed everyone to the meeting. He briefly introduced area12a and the stated the mission. An attendance list was circulated for those attending to complete.
2001 Spring Meeting
Two sessions were successfully held:
- Process Innovation in Polymers
- Process Innovation for Existing Processes
2001 Annual Meeting
12a participating in the Process Development Division Topical Conference on Batch Processing.
New Orleans (March 10-14, 2002) Session Reviews
12a contributing to Process Improvement Topical with sessions like
- Implementing Innovations
- R&D, plant and corporate interaction
Indianapolis (Fall 2002) Session Allocation
The emphasis will be on the role of computational science and engineering in process innovation with a session on 'Process Innovation Utilizing Molecular Based Modeling'.
Houston Spring 2003 Conference
12a will participate in the Pilot Plant Topical. This conference was originally scheduled for Houston, but the location has been switched to New Orleans.
San Francisco (Fall 2003) Conference
Area 12a will sponsor Process Innovation Topical in San Francisco.
Future Session Topics
New ideas were explored for future process research and innovation. The
following topics were suggested:
- Bioprocesses
- Intellectual Property Protection
- Innovations in Crystallization
- Innovations in Reaction Engineering
- Renewable Energy Resources
- Combining Unit Operations
- Microelectronics
- Bio-electronics
- Fuel Cells
- Knowledge Management
- Information Search Tools for Process Innovation, etc.
Election
With much appreciation for his efforts during the past 4 years, Kamlesh Bhatia (Dupont) stepped down as the Chair of the Area, and Cheryl Teich (Rohm & Hass) was confirmed to serve in this position. Yinlun Huang (Wayne State University) was elected as Co-Chair and Chair-Elect. Lionel O'Young (Mitsubishi) was elected as Co-Chair.
